THE VINEYARDS
Bukkuram, Ghirlanda, Sataria
Our vineyards are located in three different areas of the island,
each with its own characteristics regarding exposure and terrain.
Bukkuram
Our vines are located in the Bukkuram plain , on the slopes of Montagna Grande, an area with a unique terroir in the world, among the oldest and richest on the island.
Bukkuram has an optimal position: the east-west exposure and its 250/300 meters of altitude make it always sunny and with a wide temperature range between day and night.
Furthermore, the location at the foot of one of the highest hills on the island and in the center of a canal ensures good ventilation which prevents the stagnation of mists and humidity, the main cause of the onset of many vine diseases.
Ghirlanda
The vines of Piana della Ghirlanda are found in the south-eastern part of the island, at an altitude of 200 metres. above sea level. The lands extend over a flat area, in a sort of basin on the slopes of Mount Gibele, the most iconic volcano on the island, now extinct.
The soil here is mainly composed of tufa, in Pantelleria “soki-soki”, and is very fertile and prolific, thanks to the stagnation of humidity and a deep non-stony soil, at the expense of a slightly lower sugar content than in other areas.
Sataria
This is the area chosen for our most recent vineyards. We are near the sea with exposure to the west, in front of the sunset, at an altitude of 100 meters.
In this area, formerly dedicated exclusively to the production of zibibbo grapes, we have built a new plant, experimenting with new types of grapes such as Carignano and Alicante.
The soil is clayey and, despite the sometimes very high temperatures, the high exposure to the sun gives an excellent sugar content, among the best in Pantelleria.
Production
Today BBIRBICIÙ has a production of about 80 quintals which are entirely transformed in the company cellar in the Rekhale district.
80% of the harvest is made up of Zibibbo Moscato di Alessandria grapes, associated with other types of vineyards grown and processed on site, such as Pignatello and Catarratto.
Recently, the historic vineyards (which are more than 60 years old) have been joined by new grapes of Carignano, Alicante, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Nero d’Avola, Perricone and Grillo which will give life to new wines in the coming years .
